Wiley Read & Publish: 2026 Gold Open Access Quota Exhausted

The national quota for Gold Open Access publications with Wiley has been exhausted for 2026. UZH plans to support the funding with additional measures.

The current Wiley Read & Publish agreement (swissuniversities) includes an annual quota for Gold Open Access publications. Although this quota was originally designed to cover the anticipated publishing needs of Swiss higher education institutions, it has now been exhausted and is no longer available for the remainder of 2026.

UZH has introduced additional measures to continue supporting the funding of Wiley Gold Open Access articles after the national quota has been exhausted. On the University Library website you'll find further information on funding.

Which journals are affected?

• Only Wiley Gold Open Access journals are affected.

• Articles in Wiley hybrid journals are not affected by this development and will continue to be funded through a separate quota.

Funding for Gold Open Access

• UZH has introduced additional measures to continue supporting the funding of Wiley Gold Open Access articles after the national quota has been exhausted.
• Final confirmation of funding will only be provided after the article has been accepted and when the Open Access licence has been signed.
• Authors are encouraged to contact the UZH Open Access team at an early stage if they have questions about funding and, where appropriate, to consider alternative funding options or alternative journals.
• If you receive an invoice from Wiley for Open Access charges, please contact the UZH Open Access team before making any payment.

Publication planning

For publications in Wiley Gold Open Access journals, the date of acceptance of the article (editorial acceptance / date of acceptance) is the determining date for funding eligibility. As a new Wiley publication quota will become available from 1 January 2027, authors are encouraged to take the anticipated duration of the peer-review process into account when planning submissions through the end of 2026. Articles accepted on or after 1 January 2027 will fall under the publication quota for the 2027 licence year.
