Article Fee Funding

The University Library Zurich agreed Open Access agreements with the academic publishers listed below, which offer a full or partial discount on the Open Access publication fees to the authors affiliated with the University of Zurich. Based on theOpen Access strategy for Switzerland, the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries is negotiating national Read&Publish (R&P) agreements. Some further agreements are negotiated into institutional licenses and Open Access memberships or the publishers offer an alternative approach towards transitioning subscription-based journals into Open Access. For all these agreements, corresponding authors must indicate their affiliation with the University of Zurich or the affiliated university hospitals and use the institutional e-mail address. Authors who wish to publish their articles Open Access under the agreements must consider the criteria listed below.

Affiliation UZH / Use of institutional e-mail address

Eligibility is tied to the article's corresponding author. The corresponding author must be a member of the University of Zurich or one of the associated university hospitals. The verification of affiliation will be checked via personal register of UZH.
The corresponding author must indicate the University of Zurich (UZH) or one of the affiliated hospitals as affiliation in the published article and in the publisher's manuscript submission system.
When submitting articles, the institutional e-mail address of the University of Zurich or the affiliated university hospitals (University Hospital Zurich, Balgrist University Hospital, University Hospital of Psychiatry Zurich, University Children’s Hospital Zurich) must be used.
The author must have conducted significant parts of the research work at University of Zurich or one of the affiliated hospitals.
An employment relationship at the University of Zurich must exist at the time the publication is submitted. Articles that were written at UZH but submitted after the corresponding author has left, are generally eligible for funding. In this case, the affiliation to the University of Zurich or one of the affiliated university hospitals must be stated in the article.
The Open Access article fees of articles fo lecturers inteaching hospitals at the University of Zurich will not be covered.

Journals

The journal in which the Open Access article is to be published must be on the list of eligible journal titles under an agreement. An overview of the journals included can be found for each publisher under the individual open access agreements under "Eligible journals". Alternatively, you can use theoa.finder search tool to find out whether a journal is eligible for free Open Access publication.

Article types

The article types that can be published under the Open Access agreement see the section "Covered article types" under the individual agreements.

Agreement term

The contract term determines the date from which the articles are covered by the agreement and authors do not have to pay any fees for Open Access articles. For most publishers, the date of acceptance of the manuscript applies.

Article quotas

Some Read&Publish agreements have a maximum number of articles that can be published under the agreement in a calendar year. The article quota works on a "first come, first served" basis and is determined for each publisher across all participating institutions in Switzerland. For each agreement you will find information under the section "Article limit" if an article quota applies. If the annual quota is exhausted, it will be announced under the respective agreement. Once the quota has been reached, we can no longer cover the costs for Open Access articles until the end of the year.
If the article quota has been reached, use the secondary publication (Green Open Access) and deposit the accepted manuscript in the repositoryZORA for self-archiving.
All scientific articles resulting from a SNSF grant will need to be Open Access immediately. Further information can be found on theOpen Access page.

Open Access fees

Only Open Access publishing fees are covered. Additional fees charged by the publishers (special fee for licenses, additional page charges, color charges, etc.) are not covered.

Licenses

The University Library recommends that funded publications are generally published under a Creative Commons (CC) license (or equivalent) that is as free as possible, e.g. CC BY. The choice of license is up to the authors and also depends on the offer of the respective publishing house.

Full Article Fee Funding

There are no costs for UZH researchers for Open Access articles in journals of the following publishers. Article processing charges (APCs) are covered by UB Zurich. The specific conditions of the individual agreements can be found under the respective publisher:

ACS – American Chemical Society (R&P)

Valid for	Corresponding authors are members of the University of Zurich or one of the affiliated university hospitals.
Eligible journals	Valid for open access article processing charges of articles in thehybrid and Gold Open Access journals accepted from 1.1.2023.SNSF-Funding: The agreement with ASC excludes funding for articles inhybrid journals that acknowledge funding by the National Science Foundation (SNSF). The authors will be given the option to publish the article open access at a reduced rate. For SNSF-funded articles published inGold Open Access journals, ACS will automatically apply for article to be funded open access on behalf of the authors.

Publication process	During the process of submitting the article for publication the author must make sure to fill out their affiliation using the “autofill-option” and include their institutional email address and select “Open Access” in the submission menu. 	Update from 28 March 2024: TheDelegation Open Science (DelOS) has in principle approved the scope and cost framework of Elsevier's offer for a comprehensive Read & Publish agreement 2024-2028 for Switzerland. However, details of the possible contract are still being negotiated. The author agrees to Open Access publication and selects the Creative Commons licenseWorkflow. Retrospective open access publishing: Articles can be published open access free of charge within 14 days after acceptance. After this period the offer expires. Retrospective open access publishing requires a new request and will incur a fee of £ 400.–. This fee is not included in this agreement and can’t be covered.

SCOAP3 - journals of high energy physics

SCOAP3 is an international consortium of libraries and funders. Its goal is to continuously transform central journals in high energy physics to Open Access. We finance an annual contribution based on the researchers' publication output.

Valid for	Applies to corresponding authors from the University of Zurich.
Discount	For "Regular research articles" that are immediately published Open Access, there is adiscount due to the subscription fees of the university library. For "Brief Report articles" only the Open Access option can be chosen. These costs are not covered.
