Usage Restrictions Database Factiva
The licensed database Factiva provides access to international media content and company information. Due to unusually high download volumes, access to the database was recently subject to temporary restrictions.
There are currently no active restrictions. To help prevent future suspensions, the University Library kindly asks all users to handle downloads responsibly.
Why can restrictions occur?
Providers of licensed databases monitor access frequencies and usage patterns. Very high or systematic download activity may be classified as unauthorized use. In such cases, publishers reserve the right to suspend access - either for individual IP addresses or for the entire UZH IP range.
In the case of Factiva, the suspension affected all members of UZH and significantly limited access for an extended period. Please note that such suspensions are not limited to Factiva; they may also occur with other licensed databases.
What is not permitted?
Particular caution is required with regard to automated text and/or data extraction, for example in the context of Text and Data Mining (TDM). TDM methods are based on the systematic reproduction and storage of content. For copyright reasons, most licensed database providers do not permit this type of use.
From a technical perspective, implementation generally requires an additional, fee-based access via an application programming interface (API). API access is not included in the Factiva license. Accordingly, Text and Data Mining is not permitted for Factiva.
How can restrictions be avoided?
Please download only as many articles as you can reasonably read yourself without automated assistance. If you are unsure whether your intended use complies with the license terms, particularly in the case of automated access, please contact the E-Media Team in advance at:
