Collections of the Video Library (AFL-G-233)

The Video Library of the UB Popular Culture Studies & Film Studies holds over 55'000 Films on DVD and/or Blu-ray. The carefully curated and continuously growing collection encompasses the whole of international film history from its beginnings to the present. It covers:

  • all relevant film genres
  • films from all over the world
  • filmmakers' oeuvres
  • all eras, movementes, and styles of the international film history
  • TV series and TV movies
  • documentaries and video essays on films, filmmakers, and film movements
  • different versions of films (e.g. director's cut, various restorations, TV version)

In addition to the film collection, the Video Library has a selection of over 200 film scores on CD.

Both collections form the research stock of the Department of Film Studies and can therefore only be used on site. UZH members and the general public are welcome to view films and listen to scores in various locations within the AFL building.

How to Get a Film for On-Site Viewing

Films can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:45pm.

  • Look up call number of the film (e.g. D 12345; DE 8282) in the Video Library Catalog.
  • Fill out an order form at the desk of UB Popular Culture Studies & Film Studies or email it to filmwissenschaft@ub.uzh.ch.
  • Upon presentation of the order form and your UZH card (or any other ID card) at the desk, you will receive the film.

Note that the film you want may be booked by a member of the Department of Film Studies. If you want to check it's availability, send an email to filmwissenschaft@ub.uzh.ch in advance. We will notify you if we can provide the film for you.

How to Book a Viewing Station

The AFL building offers the following viewing possibility:

  • The Film Lounge (AFL-G-275) offers room for 1 to 10 people.
  • UZH members book the Film Lounge with booked-UB, the general public may book by phone (+41 44 634 35 09).
  • If your laptop has the required software, you can also view the film in the UB Popular Culture Studies & Film Studies.
