Usage Restrictions E-Books

E-books can be saved as PDFs and in some cases also as ePubs and thus can be accessed offline.

Scientific e-books are primarily suitable for use on PCs or tablets; use on e-readers is only possible to a limited extent.

Specific usage restrictions apply to certain e-book platforms:

DRM-free titles A small number of titles are available without restrictions on copying, printing, or downloading (DRM-free).
While the library prioritizes the acquisition of DRM-free e-books, most titles are still subject to usage restrictions imposed by publishers (see below).
Printing / Chapter Download Up to 40% of a title may be printed to PDF or downloaded by chapter per user, per session, every 24 hours
Copy / Paste Up to 20% of a title per user, per session, every 24 hours
Offline reading

Chapter download (40% of the title per user/session/24 hours) or full download in the Ebook Central User App on desktop or laptop

Signing up/in is required

Depending on the license type, a title can be downloaded (“loaned”) for a period ranging from 1 to 28 days .

If a title is not available for Read Online or Full Download, this means that all concurrent download licenses are currently in use (e.g. with 1-user or 3-user licenses). Once the loan period expires, the title will become available again.

Format

PDF (for desktop use) or EPUB (optimized for smartphones, tablets, and PCs)

In the online reader, EPUB is now the default format for improved accessibility.
